Committee on Security and Defence (SEDE)

The terrorist group ISIS controls parts of Syria, Libya and Iraq, posing both a threat to the region as well as to the security of the citizens of Europe. What measures should the EU and its member states take in order to counter the threat of ISIS and other terrorist groups. Does the recent agreement with Turkey benefit the development in the region?

Dear Delegates,

We, the committee presidents are overjoyed to welcome you in the MEP family. Vivid discussions, interesting people, the beautiful city of Copenhagen and unforgettable moments are awaiting you.

You are part of the committee on Security and Defense. In light of this committee session, we will be addressing the pressing issue of the threat of ISIS to the lives of civilians in the affected areas as well as their danger to the European security. The concrete questions that we will be discussing are:

  • What measures should the EU and its member states take in order to counter the threat of ISIS and other terrorist groups?
  • Does the recent agreement with Turkey benefit the development in the region?

We all remember the horrible pictures of the attacks of the 13th of November in Paris. Hundreds of people died, killed by radical Islamic fanatics that identified with the ISIS movement. These attacks have shown us that we are closer to the war zone then we thought we were and that this war has expanded onto a global level and is concerning all of us. Therefore, it is our duty as the Committee on Security and Defense to develop concrete plans of action to counter ISIS and to guarantee the security of civilians in Europe and in the Middle East.

We invite you to read and reflect on the issues mentioned above. In order to give you a sense of direction, please have a look at the links listed down below. Don’t hesitate to do your own research in order to feel more comfortable discussing the topic at our session.

Kind Regards

Your CP’s Carl Scheppach (Lux) and Dina Gyberg Jensen (Dk)
